International Option Baccalaureate (OIB)

What is the International Option of the French baccalaureate?

The Baccalaureate with International Option (OIB) is one of the French 'general' baccalaureates, L (French, Languages or Arts, Philosophy), ES (Economics, Mathematics), and S (Mathematics, Physics/Chemistry, Earth and Life Sciences), which can be only prepared in French schools with international section.

To obtain the OIB, candidates must pass specific papers in language, literature and history and geography (for more information, see the BO n° 40 3/11/ 2005). However, the Chinese section offers mathematics instead of history-geography. (BO n° 35, 24/09/2009).

The content of these papers and the relevant syllabus are decided jointly by the education authorities in France and the country concerned.

The International Option Baccalaureate should not be confused with the International Baccalaureate, also called the Geneva Baccalaureate. The International Baccalaureate was created by the International Baccalaureate Office of Geneva, and is a foreign diploma. The syllabus for the International Baccalaureate is different from that of the French baccalaureate.

The German section of the OIB should not be confused with the Abibac (Abitur-baccalauréat), the Spanish section of the OIB should not be confused with the BACHIBAC (Bachillerato-Baccalauréat) and the Italian section should not be confused with the ESABAC (Esame di Stato-Baccalauréat).

Where can one prepare the OIB?

There are 14 sections in which the OIB may be taken: Arab, Chinese, Danish, Dutch, English (British and American) German, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese, Polish, Russian, Spanish and Swedish. This examination may only be prepared in schools with international sections leading to the OIB. More information on ÉduSCOL.

The OIB and the CIEP

The CIEP is responsible for the administration of the oral examinations for the international option of the French baccalaureate, under an agreement with the Delegation for International Relations and Cooperation of the French Ministry of Education. The other operator that works on the OIB’s implementation is the “Service inter-académique des concours et examens” (SIEC).
