Cross-Curricular Teaching
Enseignement interdisciplinaire
Context
In 2006, the European Parliament and the Council of Europe defined eight key competences for lifelong learning.
Within the European Union, various countries such as Finland, the United Kingdom and Belgium have reformed their curricula in order to develop interdisciplinary approaches and promote the mastery of transversal skills. In this vein, the 2016 school year in France will see the implementation of interdisciplinary practical teaching in secondary schools.
The development of pedagogical approaches that go beyond traditional disciplinary configurations implies an evolution in teaching practices. In particular, in-service training should enable teachers to take part in collective projects and develop different learning strategies based on more active student participation.
Goals
The objective of the CROSSCUT project is to contribute to the improvement of teacher training in the implementation of innovative pedagogical approaches based on interdisciplinarity.
More specifically, it aims to:
- Highlight "good practices" and to identify success factors and obstacles to their implementation,
- Define the skills needed by teachers to develop relevant interdisciplinary practices,
- Design and develop an online training program,
- Create a community of practitioners on the issue of interdisciplinarity,
- Make recommendations to political authorities, school heads and teacher training institutions.
Activities and Expected Results
- A field survey entitled " An insight on interdisciplinarity in Europe today An insight on interdisciplinarity in Europe today An insight on interdisciplinarity in Europe todayAn insight on interdisciplinarity in Europe today", available now in its English version, identifies interdisciplinary practices that have proven their effectiveness among some thirty secondary schools.
- Based on the results of this study, a competency framework will be produced for teachers and school principals, defining the most important competencies to be acquired for the implementation of an interdisciplinary approach.
- A training programme will be developed. Online training modules will be accessible on a multilingual digital platform, providing access to resources and a professional community dedicated to interdisciplinary pedagogical approaches. Several hundred teachers will be trained.
- Recommendations will be made to political authorities, school heads and teacher training institutions.
Implementation dates
From 1 September 2016 to 31 August 2019.
Targeted audience
Teachers, pre-service teachers, trainers of trainers, head teachers, public authorities and policy makers.
