Seminar "Languages and children's literature"
Getting the most out of children’s literature in primary school language teaching
4-8 april 2011, CIEP (Sèvres)

Nearly all the European countries have promoted the teaching of languages as early as primary schools and developed experiments in that field. The Centre international d’études pédagogiques has been involved in the promotion of foreign language teaching in primary school in France especially through its teacher support website PrimLangues, as early as 2002, when it was created. This website provides a list of selected links, classroom resources (lesson plans, activities, etc) and a list of frequently asked questions and receives over 30 000 hits every month.

Since 2004, the section Mediathèque polyglotte presents a list of recommended readings with activity sheets in 7 languages. This particular topic allowed the CIEP to participate in the young literature book¬fair of Montreuil from 2003 to 2008.

In order to disseminate these examples of good practice and to build upon the work already carried out, with an increased focus on classroom practices, the CIEP is organising, with the European Commission support, a European seminar aimed at trainers of primary school languages teachers entitled “Getting the most out of children’s literature in primary school language teaching”.

European approach to training language teachersto effectively use literature in the classroom
The objective of this seminar is to:

  • draw up a historical, cultural and teaching overview of children’s literature in Europe,
  • present examples of good practice and/or projects of book exploitation,
  • define selection criteria of the books,
  • index various possible methodologies,
  • cooperate with the publishers and organisations promoting reading and language teaching.
